These were never designed to be convertibles.

They arrive in California and a company cuts the roofs off and add the convertible components. The bad thing is that structurally, it is shit! If you drive one of these with the top down, the windshield will start to sway and buckle. You the start to get the WORST HEADACHE and a couple minutes of driving because of this.

God, second gens make awful convertibles. One of the few vehicles that actually look better with the top up, because it's just so bad down.

My old boat mechanic in Chicago drives this thing as his work truck. He can literally fix anything and this is what he chooses...

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the 1988 Cavalier Z24 Convertible. A car so bad, taking part of it away might have made it better. I say “might” because that depends on whether you’re moving or not. When you move, the cowl shake will give you vertigo.

I’m not sure if I was being lied to or not, but according to a guy I met who ran used car show that specialized in Cavaliers (I kid you not), Chevy built them as normal Cavaliers then transported them to Mexico where they had their roofs removed and “extra bracing put in the doors - for rigidity”. Rigidity isn’t a word I’d ascribe to this thing. Ever.

I test drove one back in the early 2000s. It was weird. It had a rip roaring 140hp V6. Wooooooooooooooo.

I forget if the conversion company put subframe connectors on, but this is AWFUL for the stiffness of the chassis. Much worse than other cars.

Some part of me has a perverse want to ride in a convertible second gen just to see how bad it would be. Go over a few dozen sets of train tracks and it would probably twist the frame.

That is factory though. One of my friend’s dad bought one brand new when we were kids. I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I was 5.

But there was an aftermarket soft-top that came in the turbo, by Straman.

Ugly as sin I reckon. But they’re so rare that I do like seeing them.
